Back to Blog Consumer Protection Storm Chaser Roofers in San Antonio: How to Spot Them and Protect Yourself
Mark WhiteApril 28, 20266 min read Within 24 hours of every significant San Antonio hailstorm, something predictable happens: trucks with Oklahoma, Louisiana, Florida, and Colorado plates flood our neighborhoods. Guys in matching polo shirts knock on doors offering 'free inspections' and promising to 'handle everything with your insurance company.'
Some of these companies do acceptable work. Many don't. And when things go wrong, they're 800 miles away. After 25 years of cleaning up their messes, here's how to protect yourself.
How Storm Chasers Operate
The playbook is consistent: arrive in a city immediately after a storm, go door-to-door in affected neighborhoods, offer free inspections (which always 'find damage'), pressure homeowners to sign a contract on the spot (often with an Assignment of Benefits clause that gives them control of your claim), do the work quickly using inexperienced subcontractors, collect the insurance money, and move on to the next storm city.
The work quality ranges from 'it'll last five years instead of twenty' to 'we need to tear this off and redo it.' Neither is acceptable when your insurance company paid for a proper installation.
Red Flags to Watch For
If you see any of these, proceed with extreme caution:
- Out-of-state license plates on their trucks
- No local physical office (a hotel room or PO box doesn't count)
- They knocked on your door uninvited within days of a storm
- They pressure you to sign today with 'this deal expires' language
- They offer to pay, waive, or 'help with' your deductible (illegal under Texas HB 2102)
- They ask you to sign an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) before you've even filed a claim
- They can't provide references from YOUR zip code from work done MORE than 2 years ago
- Their Google reviews are all from different cities across the country
- They ask for large upfront payments before any work begins

The right approach after storm damage:
- Call a roofer you trust (or ask neighbors, friends, or your realtor for a recommendation)
- Verify they have a permanent local presence in San Antonio
- Get a written estimate with material specifications
- File your own claim, don't let the roofer 'handle' your claim for you
- Never sign an Assignment of Benefits unless your attorney advises it
- Pay only when work is complete and you've inspected it
- Get everything in writing, scope, materials, warranty, timeline
If You Already Hired a Storm Chaser
If the work is done and you have concerns about quality, get a second opinion from a local roofer. If the installation is deficient, you may have recourse through your insurance company or through Texas consumer protection laws. Document everything.
