Back to Blog Consumer Protection How to Verify a Roofing Contractor in Texas: The Complete Checklist
Mark WhiteApril 18, 20265 min read Texas does not have a state-level roofing license requirement. Let that sink in. Anyone can legally operate as a 'roofing contractor' in Texas without passing a test, completing training, or demonstrating competence. This makes it YOUR responsibility to verify who you're hiring.
The 8-Point Verification Checklist
Before signing any roofing contract, verify these eight items:
- Physical local address, not a PO box, not a hotel. Google Street View it. Drive by if it's close. A real business has a real location.
- General liability insurance, minimum $1 million. Ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) and call the insurance company to verify it's active. This protects YOU if they damage your property.
- Workers' compensation insurance, if a roofer's employee is injured on YOUR property without workers' comp, YOU could be liable. This is non-negotiable.
- Texas Secretary of State registration, search sos.state.tx.us to verify the business entity exists and is in good standing.
- Better Business Bureau profile, check BBB.org for complaints and resolution patterns. A few complaints are normal; a pattern of unresolved complaints is a red flag.
- Google reviews from YOUR city, not from cities across the country. Storm chasers accumulate reviews wherever they work. Look for consistent San Antonio reviews over multiple years.
- References from recent local work, ask for 3-5 references from your zip code within the last 12 months. Call them. Ask about the experience, not just the result.
- Written estimate with full specs, materials, quantities, warranty terms, timeline, payment terms. All in writing before any work begins.
