Back to Blog Advice How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in San Antonio (From a Roofer Who's Seen It All)
Mark WhiteDecember 5, 20256 min read San Antonio has somewhere north of 500 roofing companies at any given time. After a hailstorm, that number doubles overnight with out-of-town crews who show up like seagulls at a beach picnic.
I've been running Legacy Home Improvements since 1999. I've seen great contractors and I've seen homeowners get absolutely taken. Here's what I'd look for if I were hiring a roofer for my own mother's house.
They Have a Real Local Address
Not a P.O. box. Not a UPS Store mailbox. An actual office you can drive to and walk into. Storm chasers work out of hotel rooms and rental trucks. They're here for the insurance checks and gone by August. Legacy is at 8206 Roughrider Drive #104 in Windcrest. Come by anytime, the coffee's decent.
Their Reviews Tell a Story
Don't just look at the star rating, read the reviews. Specific details about communication, cleanup, professionalism, and warranty support matter more than generic "great job!" posts. Our 4.9 stars across 200+ online reviews aren't bought or incentivized. They're from real San Antonio families who wanted to share their experience.
They Carry Proper Insurance
Every legitimate roofer should have general liability AND workers' compensation insurance. Ask for certificates. If a worker falls off your roof and the company doesn't have workers' comp, guess who's liable? (Hint: it rhymes with "boo.") It's you.
Have Questions? Call Us Directly
Talk to a real person, not a call center. Mark and the Legacy team answer roofing questions all day, every day.

Materials. Scope. Timeline. Payment schedule. Warranty terms. All written down, all signed. If a contractor says "trust me" instead of writing it down, what they're really saying is "I want flexibility to cut corners."
Red Flags That Should End the Conversation
If a roofer does any of these, thank them for their time and close the door:
- Offers to waive your insurance deductible (illegal in Texas, full stop)
- Pressures you to sign a contract today ("this price is only good until midnight!")
- Asks for full payment before work starts (standard is a deposit, with balance on completion)
- Can't provide references or proof of insurance
- Has no local address or Google Business profile
- Gives you a quote without ever getting on your roof
The Decision
Choosing a roofer is one of the biggest home investment decisions you'll make. Take your time. Get 2-3 quotes. Check references. And go with someone who's been around long enough to have a real track record, and who'll still be around if you need them in 5 years.
