Back to Blog Education How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take in San Antonio?
Mark WhiteNovember 28, 20255 min read Right after "how much?" and "does insurance cover it?" comes "how long will my house be torn apart?" Fair question. Nobody wants to live under a tarp for a week. The good news: most residential roof replacements in San Antonio take 1-3 days of actual work.
But there's more to the timeline than just the install day. Let me walk you through the full process.
The Full Roof Replacement Timeline
From first call to final cleanup:
- Day 1: Free inspection and assessment, we come out, inspect your roof, provide a detailed report and quote. Takes about 45 minutes.
- Days 2-7: Documentation (if applicable), if you're filing a claim, we provide thorough damage documentation and can be present during the adjuster's inspection. Timeline depends on your insurance company's speed.
- Day 8-10: Material ordering, we order your chosen shingles, underlayment, and components. Most materials arrive within 2-3 business days in San Antonio.
- Day 11-12: Permit, filed and typically ready same or next business day in San Antonio.
- Install Day 1: Tear-off, decking inspection/repair, underlayment, and beginning shingle installation. A standard 20-30 square roof can often be torn off and dried in by end of day one.
- Install Day 2: Complete shingle installation, flashing, vents, ridge cap, and cleanup. Most roofs are 100% complete by end of day two.
- Day after: Final walkthrough, debris check, gutter cleanout, and your warranty paperwork.
What Makes a Roof Take Longer?
Some factors add time:
- Multiple layers, if your old roof has 2+ layers, tear-off takes longer
- Decking damage, rotten plywood needs replacement before new roofing goes on
- Complex geometry, lots of valleys, hips, dormers, and penetrations slow installation
- Steep pitch, safety requirements add time on steep roofs
- Weather, we don't install in rain or lightning (obviously), which can push the timeline
- Size, a 50+ square roof (5,000+ sq ft) typically takes 3 days

Try the Instant Estimator →Why Faster Isn't Always Better
Be wary of roofers who promise to do your entire roof in 4 hours. Speed means they're cutting corners, improper nailing, skipping starter strips, not installing ice-and-water shield, rushing flashing details. A crew that takes 1.5-2 full days on a standard roof is doing it right.
At Legacy, we'd rather take an extra half day and do it correctly than rush and have you calling us with a leak next year. Speed is great for pizza delivery. For roofing, thoroughness wins.
