Back to Blog Gutters Gutters in San Antonio: The Complete Homeowner's Guide
Mark WhiteJuly 28, 20255 min read Nobody moves into a new home and says "I can't wait to look at the gutter installation." They're the least glamorous part of your roofing system. They're also one of the most important, especially in San Antonio where we get 32 inches of rain per year, often dumped in 30-minute bursts during spring and summer thunderstorms.
Your gutters' job is simple: move water away from your foundation. When they fail, the consequences are expensive.
Why Gutters Matter More Than You Think
Without functioning gutters, roof runoff pours directly along your foundation. San Antonio's expansive clay soil absorbs that water, swells, and pushes against your foundation walls. The result: foundation cracks, sticking doors, sloping floors, and repair bills starting at $5,000 and going way up.
Gutters also prevent soil erosion around your landscaping, protect exterior paint and siding from splash-back, and keep water from pooling around entryways.
Seamless vs. Sectional Gutters
Seamless gutters are custom-fabricated on-site from a single piece of aluminum for each run. No joints means no leak points. They cost slightly more than sectional (about $6-$9 per linear foot installed vs $4-$6 for sectional), but the reduced maintenance and leak risk makes them the clear winner.
We only install seamless gutters at Legacy. The performance difference is significant, and the price difference is modest on a whole-house installation.
Gutter Guards: Worth It or Waste of Money?
Depends on the type. Screen-style gutter guards ($3-$6/ft) keep out leaves but clog with fine debris like live oak catkins. San Antonio's nemesis. They help, but don't eliminate cleaning.
Micro-mesh guards ($8-$12/ft) are significantly better. They block almost everything including the fine pollen and catkins that plague San Antonio homes under oak trees. Worth the investment if you have trees over your roofline.
Reverse-curve (helmet-style) guards ($12-$18/ft) are expensive and can actually cause water overshoot in heavy Texas downpours. I don't recommend them.
