Back to Blog Roofing Materials Metal Roof vs. Shingles in San Antonio: An Honest Comparison
Mark WhiteNovember 10, 20257 min read Every week, someone sits across from me and asks: "Metal or shingles?" And every week, I give the same answer that frustrates them: "It depends."
I know, I know. You wanted a clear winner. But here's the thing. I install both, every week, and they're both great choices in the right situation. What I can do is give you the real numbers and let you decide. No sales pitch. Just facts and 25 years of opinions.
Let's Talk Money First
For a typical 2,000 sq ft San Antonio home:
architectural shingles: $8,000-$15,000 installed. Impact-resistant (Class 4): $10,000-$18,000.
standing seam metal roofing metal: $20,000-$35,000. Stone-coated steel: $15,000-$25,000.
So yes, metal costs roughly 2x more upfront. If that's the end of the conversation for your budget, no shame in that, quality shingles are an excellent choice. But if you can swing the upfront cost, keep reading, because the math gets interesting over time.
The Lifespan Factor
Shingles in San Antonio: 15-22 years of real-world performance. Metal: 40-70 years. Some metal roofing installed in the 1970s are still going strong. They've outlived disco, cassette tapes, and three economic recessions.
Over a 50-year homeownership span, you'd replace a shingle roof 2-3 times versus once (or never) for metal. That $20,000 difference upfront? It starts looking pretty different at year 20.
Energy Bills (Where Metal Earns Its Keep)
This is where metal shines, literally. Metal reflects solar radiation instead of absorbing it. In San Antonio, where your AC runs approximately 47 months per year (slight exaggeration), that reflection translates to 20-40% lower cooling costs.
If your CPS Energy bill hits $350 in August, metal could save you $70-$140/month during peak summer. Over 10 years, that's $5,000-$10,000 back in your pocket just from energy savings. The roof starts paying for itself.

Both handle hail, just differently. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are specifically engineered for hail and perform great in moderate storms. They're the most popular choice in San Antonio for good reason.
Metal dents but doesn't crack. A dented metal panel still keeps water out. A cracked shingle doesn't. For severe hail, stone-coated steel roofing is the sweet spot, metal toughness with a granule surface that hides cosmetic dents. It's the Goldilocks option.
Resale Value
A metal roof adds 1-6% to home value in Texas. Buyers love hearing "you'll never need to replace this roof." Real estate agents love it too, it's a selling point that's easy to explain and hard to argue with.
Shingles add value too, but the premium is smaller. Buyers know they'll face replacement in 15-20 years.
So Which One?
If you're staying 10+ years and can manage the upfront cost → metal. The math works and your energy bills will thank you every summer.
If budget matters most or you're selling within 5 years → quality architectural shingles. Great protection, great look, great price.
