Back to Blog FAQ Why Is My Roof Making Popping and Cracking Noises? (San Antonio Homeowners)
Mark WhiteNovember 12, 20254 min read Every summer, we get calls from San Antonio homeowners worried that their roof is falling apart. 'It's making these loud popping and cracking noises, especially in the afternoon and at night!' Good news: 95% of the time, this is completely normal. Let me explain.
Thermal Expansion (The #1 Cause)
San Antonio roof surfaces can reach 150-170°F in direct summer sun. When materials heat up, they expand. When the sun sets and temperatures drop 30-40 degrees in a few hours, they contract. This expansion and contraction creates popping, cracking, and sometimes even banging sounds.
Plywood decking, roof trusses, metal flashing, and even nails all expand and contract at different rates. The sounds you hear are these materials shifting against each other. It's physics, not damage.
This is more noticeable in newer homes (materials haven't fully settled) and during extreme temperature swings (July-August in SA).
When Noise IS a Problem
While thermal expansion noise is normal, certain sounds warrant investigation: rhythmic or repetitive tapping (could indicate a loose flashing piece flapping in wind), sounds accompanied by visible ceiling cracks (possible structural movement), dripping sounds (obvious, you have a leak), and grinding or scraping (something may be rubbing that shouldn't be).
If roof noises started suddenly after a storm, or are accompanied by any visible damage inside or outside, free roof inspection.
