Back to Blog Storm Damage Your Roof Just Got Hit by a San Antonio Storm. Now What?
Mark WhiteJune 3, 20255 min read It's 11pm. The hail just stopped. Your car alarm is going off, your dog is under the bed, and you're wondering if that sound you heard was a branch hitting your roof or your roof hitting your attic. Fun times in San Antonio.
Take a deep breath. Here's the playbook. I've walked thousands of homeowners through this exact situation over 25 years, and it always starts the same way.
Step 1: Stay Off the Roof (Seriously)
I know you want to check. I respect the instinct. But please, do NOT get on your roof after a storm. Wet surfaces, hidden structural damage, and the adrenaline that makes you think you're invincible are a bad combination.
If water is actively coming in, place buckets, move your valuables, and know that you've handled the emergency. We'll handle the roof at first light.
Step 2: Document Everything from the Ground
Grab your phone. Walk your property. Photograph everything: shingles in the yard, dented gutter installation, cracked siding, water spots inside. Take video too. These date-stamped images become your best friend during the insurance process.
Pro tip: also photograph your neighbors' damage if it's visible. This helps establish the storm's severity for your claim.
Step 3: Emergency Tarping (If Needed)
If you can see an obvious hole, a tree limb through the roof, a large section of missing shingles, emergency tarping prevents water damage from turning into mold and structural damage. Many roofers, including us, offer emergency tarping within hours.
Call (210) 272-7272, we answer 24/7 for storm emergencies. We'll get a tarp on it fast.
Schedule a Free Roof Inspection
Not sure about the condition of your roof? We will send a certified inspector to your home at no cost. Same day or next business day availability.
Book Your Free Inspection →Step 4: Beware the Storm Chasers
Within 24 hours of every major San Antonio storm, your doorbell will ring. A guy in a polo shirt with out-of-state plates will offer a "free inspection" and pressure you to sign a contract. These storm chasers do mediocre work, collect insurance money, and disappear to the next disaster.
How to spot them: no local office, no Texas address, they appeared the day after the storm, and they're weirdly aggressive about getting you to sign something. A legitimate local roofer won't pressure you. We've been at the same Windcrest address since 1999, you can literally drive by and see our sign.
Step 5: Call Your Roofer, Then Your Insurance
Get a professional inspection before filing your claim. Your roofer's documentation makes the insurance process dramatically smoother. We've detailed why in our full storm damage guide.
Legacy Home Improvements typically responds within 24 hours of a storm for inspections. We bring drones, cameras, and 25 years of experience. The inspection is free, and we'll give you an honest assessment whether or not you use us for the repair.
You're Going to Be Fine
Storms are stressful. Property damage is emotional. But this is fixable. San Antonio roofers deal with storm damage every single season, it's literally what we do. And Legacy has been doing it since 1999.
Call (210) 272-7272 anytime. Check your storm risk at legacytx.com/storm-damage-check. And take a breath, you've got this.
