Back to Blog Storm Damage Wind Damage to Your Roof: What 60, 80, and 100+ MPH Winds Do to Shingles
Mark WhiteJune 5, 20255 min read Shingle manufacturers proudly advertise wind ratings: 110 mph, 130 mph, even 150 mph. Those are lab-tested numbers under perfect conditions with brand-new shingles. Real-world performance is different, especially on roofs that are 5, 10, or 15 years old.
Here's what actually happens at different wind speeds in San Antonio.
40-60 MPH: Loose Debris and Vulnerable Spots
Common in San Antonio thunderstorms. At these speeds, well-installed shingles in good condition hold fine. But: aged sealant strips may release, lifted or previously repaired shingles can peel back, ridge cap shingles (the most wind-exposed) may lift, and unsecured flashing can bend or detach.
This is where maintenance matters most. A roof in good condition handles 60 mph fine. A neglected roof doesn't.
60-80 MPH: Significant Shingle Damage Possible
Severe thunderstorm territory. At these speeds: shingles with weakened sealant bonds will lift and potentially tear off, edge and corner shingles are most vulnerable (they experience higher wind loads than mid-field shingles), and debris impact from flying objects (branches, fence boards, patio furniture) causes puncture damage.
After a 60-80 mph wind event, professional inspection is warranted even if you can't see damage from the ground.

Derecho or tropical storm territory. These speeds can: strip entire slopes of shingles, peel underlayment from the deck, damage the deck itself, and cause structural damage to trusses or rafters.
Events at this level warrant emergency tarping and roofing storm damage restoration. Document damage immediately and call your roofer and insurance company.
