Back to Blog Metal Roofing How to Choose a Metal Roofing Company in San Antonio (7 Questions That Expose the Pretenders)
Mark WhiteAugust 7, 20267 min read Here's something most homeowners don't know: installing a standing seam metal roofing metal roof has almost nothing in common with installing shingles. Different tools, different training, different flashing details, different failure points. Yet when metal roofing demand exploded in San Antonio after the last few hail seasons, every shingle crew in town suddenly added "metal roofing" to their website.
I've been asked to fix enough botched metal installs to tell you: the most expensive metal roof is the one installed twice. Here are the seven questions I'd ask any metal roofing company in San Antonio before signing, including mine.
1. How Many Metal Roofs Did You Install Last Year?
Not roofs total. Metal roofs. A real metal roofing company can answer instantly and show you addresses you can drive past. If the answer is vague ("we do them all the time"), ask for three recent metal projects with photos. A crew that installs metal weekly develops instincts about panel expansion, fastener torque, and flashing details that a twice-a-year crew simply doesn't have.
2. Do You Install Concealed or Exposed Fastener Systems, and When?
This is a knowledge test. Standing seam uses concealed clips that let panels expand and contract with temperature swings, which in San Antonio can exceed 80 degrees between a July afternoon and a January morning. Exposed fastener panels are cheaper but need periodic washer maintenance. A competent company explains the tradeoff and recommends based on your roof and budget. A pretender pushes whichever one they know how to install.
3. What Gauge and Finish Are You Quoting?
Two quotes for "standing seam" can differ by thousands because one is 24-gauge steel with a Kynar 500 finish and the other is thinner 29-gauge with a basic polyester coat that chalks and fades in Texas sun within a decade. Make every bidder put gauge, panel profile, and finish in writing so you're comparing the same roof.
4. How Do You Handle Penetrations and Valleys?
Metal roofs rarely leak in the field of the panel. They leak at pipes, chimneys, skylights, and valleys. Ask the company how they flash a pipe boot on a standing seam panel. If they can't describe it in detail, or they say "same as shingles," that's your exit. The answer should involve purpose-made boots, soldered or riveted details, and sealants rated for metal movement.

Manufacturers like Decra and the major standing seam panel makers certify installers, and some warranties are only valid when a certified company does the work. Ask whose panels they install and whether the manufacturer warranty is registered in your name when the job closes.
6. What Does the Workmanship Warranty Cover, Separately From the Panels?
The metal itself may carry a 30 to 50 year finish warranty, but that covers the paint and the panel, not the installation. Flashing failures, fastener issues, and trim problems are workmanship, and that warranty comes from the company, in writing. If the company disappears, so does that warranty, which is why the next question matters most.
7. How Long Have You Operated in San Antonio Under This Name?
Metal roofs last 40 to 70 years. A warranty from a company that formed last spring is a coin flip. Look for a local track record you can verify: years in business under the same name, a physical local presence, reviews across platforms, and BBB history. Storm chasers follow hail into town, sell hard, and are gone before the first summer expansion cycle tests their fastener work.
One more practical note: metal costs more upfront than shingles, but roof financing changes the monthly picture. A $30,000 standing seam roof financed over 30 years runs about $215 a month, and energy savings plus insurance discounts for Class 4 impact-rated roofing offset part of that. See our financing page for real payment examples.
The Short Version
Ask for recent metal addresses, test their flashing knowledge, get gauge and finish in writing, and verify the local track record. Any established metal roofing company in San Antonio will pass all seven questions without flinching.
