Mark WhiteJuly 24, 20267 min read San Antonio averages 33 days above 100 degrees every year. Your roof is the largest surface on your home exposed to that sun. What your roof does with all that heat, absorb it or reflect it, has a direct impact on your CPS Energy bill.
Dark architectural shingles absorb up to 90% of solar energy. On a 105-degree day, your roof surface can hit 160 to 170 degrees. That heat radiates into your attic, which pushes past 140 degrees, and your air conditioning runs continuously trying to keep up.
How Metal Roofing Changes the Equation
metal roofing with a reflective finish bounces back up to 70% of solar radiation instead of absorbing it. On that same 105-degree day, a light-colored metal roof surface might reach 120 to 130 degrees instead of 170. That 40-degree difference at the roof translates to a dramatically cooler attic.
Cooler attic means less heat radiating down into your living space. Less heat means your AC cycles less frequently. Less cycling means lower electricity consumption and less wear on your HVAC system.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (a U.S. Department of Energy facility) has studied reflective metal roofing extensively. Their research shows energy savings of 10% to 25% on cooling costs for homes that switch from dark shingles to reflective metal.
What That Means for Your CPS Energy Bill
The average San Antonio household spends $200 to $400 per month on electricity during peak summer months (June through September). About 40% to 50% of that goes to cooling.
If metal roofing reduces your cooling costs by 15%, here is what the savings look like: on a $300 monthly summer bill, cooling is roughly $135. A 15% reduction saves about $20 per month during peak summer. Over a full year (accounting for milder months), most homeowners see $200 to $500 in annual energy savings.
That adds up. Over 30 years: $6,000 to $15,000 in energy savings. Combined with insurance discounts, metal roofing pays for its upfront premium and then some.

Not all metal roofs reflect heat equally. The color and finish coating make a significant difference.
Light colors like galvalume silver, light gray, and white reflect the most solar energy and deliver the highest cooling savings. These are the best performers in San Antonio's climate.
Medium tones like tan, light bronze, and sage green perform well while offering more traditional aesthetics. Dark colors like charcoal and dark bronze still outperform dark shingles because metal conducts heat away from the surface faster, but the savings gap narrows.
If maximum energy efficiency is a priority, we recommend a light-colored standing seam metal roofing panel with an Energy Star rated PVDF (Kynar 500) finish. This combination delivers the best thermal performance and maintains its reflective properties for decades without fading.
The Ventilation Factor
Metal roofing alone reduces attic heat, but pairing it with proper ventilation multiplies the benefit. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and in some cases powered attic ventilation work together with the reflective roof to keep your attic temperature closer to outdoor ambient temperature.
During every metal roof installation, we assess your current ventilation setup and recommend improvements if needed. Many older San Antonio homes have inadequate ventilation that was never addressed during previous reroofs. Fixing that during a metal roof install is the most cost-effective time to do it.
