Back to Blog FAQ Why Does My Roof Make Noise? (Creaking, Popping, Tapping Explained)
Mark WhiteJune 28, 20254 min read It's 2 AM. You hear a loud pop from above. Then another. Is your roof failing? Is something on the roof? Should you call someone?
Relax, in most cases, roof noises have completely benign explanations. But there are a few sounds that warrant attention. Here's how to tell the difference.
Popping and Cracking (Usually Normal)
The most common roof noise in San Antonio: thermal expansion and contraction. Your roof absorbs heat all day, expanding the decking, trusses, and fasteners. At night, everything cools and contracts. This movement creates popping and cracking sounds, especially during rapid temperature changes.
These sounds are louder in the evening and early morning when temperature shifts are fastest. They're completely normal and don't indicate damage. metal roofing are particularly 'noisy' during thermal cycling, that's not a defect, it's physics.
Tapping and Scratching (Check Your Trees)
Tree branches touching or near your roof create tapping and scratching sounds, especially on windy nights. Beyond being annoying, branches contacting your roof actually cause damage over time, they wear away granules and can damage shingles.
Solution: trim any branches within 6 feet of your roof surface. Your shingles and your sleep quality will both improve.
When to Actually Worry
Sounds that should prompt a call to a professional:
- Dripping sounds (especially during or after rain), potential active leak
- Sustained creaking under heavy wind, possible structural issue
- Scurrying or scratching from inside the attic, animal intrusion
- Loud snapping during a storm, possible structural failure from falling debris
