Back to Blog Seasonal Can You Replace a Roof in Winter in San Antonio? (Yes, and Here's Why It's Smart)
Mark WhiteDecember 28, 20254 min read "Can you really replace a roof in December?" I hear this every fall from homeowners who know they need a roof replacement but think they should wait until spring. In San Antonio? Waiting for spring is actually the worst timing strategy.
Here's why winter is one of the best times to replace your roof in San Antonio.
San Antonio Winters Are Mild
The minimum recommended temperature for asphalt shingle installation is 40°F. San Antonio's average winter low is 38-42°F, and daytime temperatures routinely reach 55-70°F even in January. We can install on the vast majority of winter days.
The shingle sealant strips (which bond shingles together) need heat to activate. In winter installations, they'll fully seal during the first warm spell, typically within days or weeks. This is standard practice nationwide and doesn't affect long-term performance.
Why Winter Is Actually Better
Shorter wait times, after spring hail season, every roofer in San Antonio has a 3-6 week backlog. In winter? We can often start within a week.
Potential cost savings, some roofing companies offer off-season pricing or promotions during slower months (November-February). At minimum, you'll have more negotiating flexibility.
Your choice of crew, during peak season, demand forces companies to spread their best installers thin. In winter, you get the A-team.
No rush pressure, a winter replacement is planned and controlled. A post-storm replacement is reactive and pressured.

The one valid concern: rain. We can't install in active precipitation (that's true year-round). San Antonio's winter rainfall is lower than spring/summer, but we schedule around weather forecasts to ensure dry installation conditions.
