Back to Blog Seasonal San Antonio Hail Season: How to Prepare Your Roof Before the Storms Hit
Mark WhiteMarch 1, 20265 min read Every year around March, my phone starts ringing with the same call: "We just got hit with hail, can you come look at my roof?" And every year, I think the same thing: if only they'd called last month.
You can't hail-proof your roof. But you CAN prepare for hail season in ways that save you time, money, and headaches when the inevitable storm hits.
When Is Hail Season in San Antonio?
Peak hail season in San Antonio runs from March through June, with April and May being the most active months. But significant hail can occur anytime from February through November. We've seen major hail events on Thanksgiving weekend.
San Antonio sits in what meteorologists call 'Hail Alley', the corridor running from Central Texas up through Oklahoma where cold fronts from the Rockies collide with warm Gulf moisture. It's the same mechanism that produces tornadoes, but we mostly get the hail version.
Pre-Season Checklist: Do This in February
The best time to prepare is before the first storm:
- Get a professional roof inspection, know the current condition of your roof BEFORE storm season. This establishes a baseline so post-storm damage is clearly distinguishable from pre-existing wear
- Review your insurance policy, know your deductible, whether you have RCV or ACV coverage, and whether you have any cosmetic damage exclusions
- Document your roof, take dated photos of your roof, gutters, vents, and soft metals (AC unit, mailbox) from the ground. This documentation proves pre-storm condition
- Clean gutters, clogged gutters plus heavy storm rain equals water damage on top of hail damage
- Trim overhanging branches, flying branches cause more damage than hail in many storms
- Verify your roofer's number is in your phone, when a storm hits, you want to call someone you trust, not the first door-knocker who shows up
During the Storm: Stay Safe
Move vehicles into the garage if possible. Stay away from windows. Do NOT go outside to 'check on the roof' during active hail, people get seriously hurt doing this every year.
After the storm passes and it's safe: walk around the exterior and document damage to soft metals, windows, siding, and anything else. Take photos and video with your phone, timestamps are your friend.
