Back to Blog Seasonal Hurricane Season and Your San Antonio Roof: Preparation Guide
Mark WhiteMay 25, 20265 min read San Antonio isn't a coastal city, and most of us don't think much about hurricanes. But Hurricane Harvey (2017), Tropical Storm Imelda (2019), and others have reminded us that tropical systems don't stop at the beach. By the time they reach San Antonio, they've weakened, but they still bring 50-70 mph wind gusts and torrential rain that tests every roof.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Here's how to prepare.
Wind: Your Roof's Biggest Hurricane Threat
Tropical storm-force winds (39-73 mph) can reach San Antonio from Gulf hurricanes. These winds exploit every weakness in your roof: loose shingles get lifted, weak nailing patterns fail, deteriorated sealant strips let wind get under shingles, and poorly attached ridge caps fly off.
The fix is preventative: ensure your roof is in good condition BEFORE hurricane season. A professional inspection that identifies loose shingles, failed sealant, or weak flashing allows for targeted repairs that cost hundreds, not the thousands you'll spend after wind damage.
Rain: Volume and Duration
Tropical systems dump rain for 24-72 hours straight, far longer than a typical thunderstorm. This sustained rainfall tests drainage systems to their limits. gutter installation that handle a 30-minute downpour fine may overflow during a 48-hour rain event.
Check and clean gutters, ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation, and clear any debris from the roof surface before the storm arrives.
