Back to Blog Seasonal How San Antonio Summers Destroy Your Roof (And How to Fight Back)
Mark WhiteMay 15, 20265 min read Everyone in San Antonio worries about hail season. And they should, hail can destroy a roof in minutes. But here's what most homeowners don't realize: the slow, silent damage from five months of relentless Texas sun does more cumulative harm to your roof than most storms.
Here's what's happening up there while you're running your AC at full blast.
UV Radiation: The Invisible Destroyer
San Antonio averages 220+ sunny days per year. That's 220 days of UV radiation breaking down the chemical bonds in your shingles' asphalt coating. You see this as granule loss, those tiny colored pebbles washing off your shingles and collecting in your gutter installation.
Some granule loss is normal. But excessive loss (thick accumulation in gutters, bare spots visible on shingles) means your roof's UV protection is compromised. Once the granules are gone, the asphalt underneath degrades exponentially faster.
Thermal Cycling: The Daily Stretch and Squeeze
A San Antonio roof surface can be 160°F at 3pm and 85°F at 3am. That 75-degree daily swing causes every component, shingles, flashing, fasteners, sealant, to expand and contract. Multiply that by 365 days and you have thousands of stretch-squeeze cycles per year.
This thermal cycling is why sealant around flashing cracks, nails back out, and shingles eventually curl. It's also why cheap sealants fail in Texas but might last decades in milder climates.

Do this checklist every spring:
- Clean gutters and downspouts, summer storms dump a lot of water fast, and clogged gutters cause backup under shingles
- Check attic ventilation, make sure soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation and ridge vent is clear
- Trim branches within 6 feet of your roof, reduces debris and improves airflow
- Look for visible shingle damage from the ground, curling, cracking, or dark spots
- Schedule a professional inspection if your roof is over 15 years old
Legacy Home Improvements offers free pre-summer roof inspections. We'll check your ventilation, shingle condition, and flashing, everything you can't see from the ground. Call (210) 272-7272.
